Summary: | The present research investigated the effectiveness a technology-enabled multisensory
intervention in improving the alphabet knowledge (letter recognition, letter name knowledge,
and letter writing fluency) of primary school children who are at risk of reading difficulties.
The study was conducted with an experimental pre-post design. The participants consisted of
20 primary school students from a public elementary school in Kuching, Sarawak. The
experimental group students (n = 10) were administered with the intervention for 5 days and
10 sessions (30 minutes/session), while the control group students (n = 10) underwent normal
lesson. The analysis showed that the intervention successfully improved the letter name
knowledge of uppercase letters of the experimental group. Meanwhile, letter recognition,
letter writing fluency, and letter name knowledge (lowercase) did not exhibit significant
improvement for the experimental group. The results did not differ for the control group.
Moreover, there was no significant difference found between the performance between the
control and experimental group. Further, the methodological limitations were identified, and
solutions were suggestion to advance future investigations in this area. This study concludes
with partial evidence that the technology-enabled multisensory intervention can improve the
alphabet knowledge of children in terms of upper-case letter name knowledge. |
