The performance of the boiler influences the efficiency of a coal-fired power plant. The coal type, combustion characteristics and the heat transfer from the flue gas side to water steam side are affected the boiler performance. The severe ash deposition such as slagging and fouling could lead an unscheduled outage to the plant for cleaning and maintenance purpose. In this paper, coal characteristics of 2 types of sub-bituminous coal has been analysed to investigate the effect of slagging and fouling in the furnace by combustion test rig facility of TNBR. The experimental analysis on proximate analysis, ash composition and ash melting point had been determined to evaluate coal ash deposition. The volatile matter and fixed carbon content gave great impact on the combustion as the ignitability is high while fuel ratio is low. The results shown that coal A has higher ash melting point as it has higher Fe2O3, Al2O3 and SiO2 contents compared to coal B. The base and acid constituents are used to determine the slagging and fouling deposition. The ash behaviour deposition for both coal had been analysed by scanning electron microscopy analysis.
