Summary: | This study aimed to find out the Unimas in-service ESL teachers' views in using
translation technique in the ESL classroom. It also attempted to investigate the reasons
why some teachers either chose to use or `ban' translation in their classrooms. 45 PKPG
ESL teachers participated in this study. The data was obtained through a 15- item
questionnaire and a set of open-ended interview question. The findings revealed that 41
out of 45 or 91.1% of the respondents viewed translation as beneficial when it is used
only when necessary for both teachers and students. The result also showed that 55.5% of
the respondents agreed that translation should be totally banned in the ESL classroom.
The interview conducted with 10 respondents indicated that 7 out of 10 respondents
claimed that translation technique could be useful in the ESL classroom when used in a
small amount or should be kept to the minimum and only be used when necessary. It
means that the teacher would resort to translation when it is beneficial for both teachers
and students; whereas the remaining 3 of the respondents totally disagreed on the use of
translation in English teaching classrooms. |
