Description
Summary:Lead is a highly toxic metal exist naturally in environment, widely used as fuel and paints additives, batteries, home ware and toys. Enter human body through ingestion, inhalation and absorption of lead contaminated material from food or environment. The goal of this study was to investigate the association between blood lead concentrations and working memory ability of primary school children. This study was conducted on 60 children's in District of Ranau, Sabah. The result of this research indicates that the arithmetic mean of blood lead was 4.5±0.1 ~g/dL and median score was 5.5±0.2 ~g/dL. The value of blood lead level is low compare to the standard exposure by public health (1 O~g/dL) maybe due to the improvement on socia-economic status of population, leaded fuel banned and Mamut Copper Mine Sdn. Bhd. operation shut down. The level of working memory index (WMI) also indicates that students have better performances in cognitive ability. Results showed the arithmetic mean score WMI was 45 and median score was 50, out of 73 full score, as well as perceptions on health and wellness among student showed by questionnaire survey 95% healthy, 60% not practicing bad behavior, 100% have none direct contact to lead. Finally, this study has shown that WMI has the inverse relationship with children blood lead even at very low levels at value of 1 O~g/dL, and any moves to protect the environment will directly improve the livelihood of the population as well as their health status.
