Description
Summary:Recent fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles on Malaysian motorways have sparked serious concerns about road safety, particularly following an incident where a detached lorry wheel resulted in multiple deaths. The article examines three critical aspects of heavy vehicle safety: maintenance, operations, and environmental factors. Maintenance issues highlighted include inadequate periodic inspections, poor documentation of records, and the use of substandard replacement parts, along with insufficient checks on critical components such as brakes, tyres, and suspension systems. Operational challenges focus on pre-journey inspections, proper load management, and driver fatigue monitoring, while environmental factors add complexity through challenges with night driving visibility, complex traffic conditions, and weather impacts. The quality of road infrastructure and maintenance also plays a crucial role in vehicle stability and control. To address these issues, the article proposes several solutions, including the implementation of digital maintenance tracking systems, comprehensive driver training programmes, and stricter enforcement of safety regulations, emphasising the need for a holistic approach to prevent future accidents.
