Tube versus Gel Cross Match Methods at the National Blood Centre in Malaysia: A Comparative Study

The objective was to determine the prevalence of positive gel cross match in situation of conjoint negative tube cross match and antibody screening in pre-transfusion testing practices. Study design: Prospective analysis of 2,600 samples with negative gel antibody screening...

Boher Afifah, H. Hassan Q Science (General) The objective was to determine the prevalence of positive gel cross match in situation of conjoint negative tube cross match and antibody screening in pre-transfusion testing practices. Study design: Prospective analysis of 2,600 samples with negative gel antibody screening results was done by tube and gel cross-match techniques in the Transfusion Medicine Unit in National Blood Center / Kuala Lumpur. Results: Positive gel cross-match was detected in 12 out of 2,600 (0.5%) tested samples that have negative both antibody screening and tube cross-match testing results. Six (50%) out of the total positive gel cross-match showed strong agglutination reaction (4+ and 3+ agglutination reaction grade). Conclusion: The situation of reactive gel cross-match with conjoint negative gel antibody screening and conventional tube cross match could occur despite using screening cells that cover most of the clinically significant antigens. 2013-02 Article PeerReviewed Uday Younis, Hussein and Herda, R.
