The individual constituent was confirmed by FTIR, NMR, HPLC, TGA and CHNS analysis. In terms of efficiency of lignin extraction, the nitrile-based ionic liquids containing Cl perform well compared to [Bmim]Cl. The ionic liquids in the order of increasing extraction efficiency are [Bmim]Cl < [CzCNBim]Cl < [CzCNHEim]Cl < [CzCNAim]Cl < [CzCNBzim]Cl.
