The usual approach is to provide a stocktaking inventory of the positive and negative impacts so that the general reader, or the beginner in tourism studies, can form a more balanced perspective on the contribution of the tourist industry to the host community. Exposure to the more specific areas in the inventory is usually uneven, however, and the depth of insight into particular areas ultimately depends on how much information is available to them.
