In designing effective business communication courses and preparing graduates that are competent in the English language it is essential to first examine the features, characteristics, and the various strategies that the users of ELF employ in business communication. Thus, the aim of this research was to develop a framework of business communicative and intercultural competence (MABCIC) based on the data from actual English language used in Malaysian and ASEAN business contexts from the perspectives of stakeholders in the business community. A mixed method approach that combined the use of questionnaires, semi-structured interviews with business professionals and feedback from business communication lecturers were used to gather data and construct the MABCIC framework. The results of the questionnaire showed that most of the 170 respondents reported that they used English almost all the time, even with Malaysian colleagues and clients and ranked clear communication and business related vocabulary as the most important characteristics of business communication. The semi-structured interviews with professionals revealed that culture, be it organizational culture, individual as well as national culture played a big role in business communication, among others. The participants also shared that there was a mismatch between what they learnt in the university and the skills they needed in their jobs, in terms of communication. The framework that is proposed in this research consists of four important elements, i.e. competence in English as a Business Lingua Franca, competence in business communication, communication strategies and accommodation strategies, and at the core of these four elements is culture. Culture is the basis of Business English as a lingua franca (BELF) as an understanding of culture of oneself and others enables people to adapt to the many different contexts and situations they may need to face. With globalization and volatile market forces, Malaysia needs to develop and train a robust and agile workforce, and tantamount to all these business networking is the English language. In current times, it is necessary to develop skills that allow people to adapt to the many different contexts and situations they may need to face. Business communication courses should strive to equip students with skills to adapt to various situations and become life-long learners rather than focusing on developing merely communicative competence that focuses on language accuracy per se. It is hoped that the MABCIC framework will one day pave the way to develop business communication courses that will help train students who function well at the workplace that may require them to communicate with others who use English as a lingua franca.
