Description
Summary:The era of globalization and liberalization has created a more intense environment with increased competition and challenges, and an effective job performance in an organization is needed to face these uncertainties. To remain relevant, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) needs transformational leaders who possess great thinking power, high work enthusiasm and able to handle issues as a key driver for improving productivity. As a growing organization, TNB has embarked on Transform 1TNB program aiming to bring TNB towards excellence and superiority which can only be achieved through support by the workforce especially executives who are the drivers of this program. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine if there exists significant relationships between transformational leadership, political skills and job performance. This study also aimed to determine if political skill mediates the relationships between dimensions of transformational leadership and job performance. The study employed the questionnaire survey method and questionnaires were sent to 1785 respondents to all TNB branches in Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 360 usable questionnaires were returned for further analysis using the SPSS. Several statistical techniques such as descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regressions were used for interpreting the data. Four dimensions of transformational leadership used in this study are idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration. The findings revealed that idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration as well as political skills have significant relationship with job performance. Political skill was also found to mediate the relationships between idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, individualized, and job performance. The findings of this study provided support on the importance of building and developing effective leaders who have the necessary skills to strategize and overcome challenges for the pursuit of organizational goals. Finally discussion on the limitations of study and suggestions for future research were provided.
