Summary: | The crime rates involving women and child trafficking are increasing in Indonesia. Phenomenon is caused by the inability of the Indonesian government to provide employment opportunities for its people. This has indirectly resulted in poor which then provides opportunities for criminal groups involved in human smuggling to recruit these unfortunate people through various means. The Indonesian government has implemented a strategy to overcome the crime against women and children trafficking by introducing Enactment 21 in 2007. This law deals with actions to be taken against human traffickers with the cooperation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This study aims to investigate the strategies used in combating trafficking in women and children in the Riau islands and Batam are the case study in this thesis. In addition, it is to investigate the weaknesses with the trafficking enactment. The study was carried out using the qualitative method which involved interviewing several informants. This
study is further strengthened by the cooperation of IOM and library studies based
on Sociology Liberalism Theory. The study found that the biggest issue relates to the inappropriate punishment imposed by the judges on the perpetrators. They are not afraid to repeat the offense because of the light sentence imposed on them. In addition, this study has been able to show that the successful cooperation with IOM and Malaysia has reduced the number of criminal activities involving trafficking in woman and children from Riau and Batam. The results of this study have contributed to the increased knowledge and understanding of women and children trafficking at the Indonesia. |
