Environmental issues have received much attention in Malaysia as the rapid development of industries such as manufacturing, agriculture and tourism has contributed to environmental pollution. In this regard, various efforts have been made to prevent and reduce the effects of damage to the environment, including the Environmental Management System (EMS). By adopting the Environmental Management System (EMS), the undesirable effects toward environmental degrading hopefully can be minimized. The purpose of this study was to extend the understanding of how motivational and barrier factors affect the adoption of EMS among Malaysian hotels. The sample of this study was based on questionnaires collected from 56 of 4- and 5-star hotels in the Central Region of Malaysia including Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. This study employed the Least Square Partial Structural Equation Modeling and utilized the Institutional Theory as the underpinning theory. The study found that both the motivational and barrier factors (internal and external) do not influence the adoption of EMS among Malaysian hotels. Further analysis revealed that different sizes of hotel also do not affect the adoption of EMS. The results imply that the hoteliers do not grasp the benefits, namely cost saving, environmental awareness, marketing and competitive advantage through the adoption of EMS. The study expands the literature on how motivational and barrier factors simultaneously affect the adoption of EMS in an emerging market like Malaysia. Further, this study also provides new evidence that the size of the hotels does not influence the effect of motivational and barrier factors on the adoption of EMS. 2020 Thesis NonPeerReviewed text en https://etd.uum.edu.my/10428/1/grant%20the%20permission_s94480.pdf text en https://etd.uum.edu.my/10428/2/s94480_01.pdf Noor Rohin, Awalludin (2020) Factors affecting the adoption of environmental management system among Malaysian hotels.
