Description
Summary:Worldwide, sustainable coastal management has become increasingly important because of the crucial role that coastal area plays in human life. Coastal development often causes environmental impacts, since coastal areas are being used for urban development and industrialisation. The present paper aims to address some of the coastal management policies of Malaysia, with the main focus on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A new approach to sustainable coastal erosion management along the tropical shorelines, which is occupied by mangroves, is proposed and discussed. In this method, which was applied to case study on the west coast of Selangor, Malaysia, a detached breakwater was constructed to provide a suitable environment for planting mangrove, which is expected to rehabilitate the beach. The results were promising showing the efficiency of the breakwater.
