The carcinogenic and mutagenic character of PAHs is correlated to their stereochemical aspects: structural, electronic, stability, reactivity, etc. In order to quantify the rate of formation and/or degradation of PAHs, thermo-kinetic analysis could be employed. Common methods for PAH degradation include physical method of using thermal treatment at high-temperature and chemical method involving reaction with suitable agents.
