Many of the biological and physico-chemical processes which are mediated by microorganisms occur within microenvironments which can be measured over micrometer spatial scale. This paper emphasised that the influences of physico-chemical fluctuations within coastal systems were addressed in the understanding of small-scale microbial activities.
