The silver ion substitution (Ag+) on nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite for contrast agent materials

This research developed a single contrast agent based on hydroxyapatite (HA) [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] nanoparticles with Ag+ ions substitution to improve image quality. The samples of Ca10-xAgx(PO4)6(OH)2 with Ag concentrations (0 = x = 0.0028) were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The results showe...

Description
Summary:This research developed a single contrast agent based on hydroxyapatite (HA) [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] nanoparticles with Ag+ ions substitution to improve image quality. The samples of Ca10-xAgx(PO4)6(OH)2 with Ag concentrations (0 = x = 0.0028) were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The results showed that Ca10-xAgx(PO4)6(OH)2 was successfully synthesized in a single phase which has hexagonal structure. The substitution of Ag+ ions cause the decrease in the crystal size. The biocompatibility of samples decreases compared to pure HA. The contrast level of the samples was confirmed by SEM. The substitution of Ag+ with concentration x = 0.0024 is suitable for contrast agents.
