Masyarakat masa kini mempunyai kelaziman pemahaman bahawa untuk mendapatkan sebuah masyarakat yang maju dan ekonomi yang mantap, pencemaran alam sekitar tidak dapat dielakkan. Pendek kata, ia telah dipersepsikan bahawa krisis alam sekitar adalah kesan lumrah kehidupan manusia yang inginkan ‘pembangunan’ dan ‘kemajuan’ dalam semua aspek kehidupan mereka.
