Summary: | Numerous studies have proposed that strategic management in human resource practice has played a tremendous role on employee performance. Empirically, the high-performance work system in strategic human resource management has demonstrated an important role on teacher performance. Consequently, this study examined the role of high-performance work system elements such as staffing, training, involvement, compensation, performance appraisal and caring on teacher performance in Lagos state secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The research also investigated the effects of mediator variables such as concern for teachers, concern for students, helping behavior, service performance and teacher religious spirituality on teacher performance. A total of 921 teaching staff were randomly selected among the Lagos state ministry of education teachers. Similarly, 80 items were used to test the high-performance work system and the mediator variables were assessed using structural equation modeling. The results of the analysis affirmed that high-performance work system is significantly related to teacher performance. Furthermore, the result also presented that the aforementioned mediator variables play a significant role in high-performance work system and teacher performance. This study also found that concern for teachers and concern for students affect teachers helping behavior and service performance respectively, which consequently improve teacher performance.
