Summary: | Objective : To describe the clinical course case of Acute Transverse Myelopathy following an MMR
vaccination and the review the literature regarding association of transverse myelitis and vaccination.
Method: Case report
Results: A 1-year old healthy Chinese boy presented with 5 days history of fever, coryzal symptoms and
acute bilateral symmetrical lower limb weakness with urinary incontinence 4 days following his first
Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccination. Examination revealed an alert child with bilateral flaccid
symmetrical weakness of his lower limbs.
His MRI findings, nerve conduction study and other relevant investigations are discussed. The clinical
progress following treatment with review of all reported systemic and neurologic adverse reactions to MMR
vaccination since its introduction in Malaysia are reviewed.
Conclusion: Acute transverse myelitis following MMR vaccination is extremely rare and this is the first
reported case in Malaysia. |
