Water splitting through usage of photovoltaics to assist electro-catalysis appeared the best route for a cleaner energy production. Material properties play a huge role in affecting conversion efficiency from photon (solar) to energy (hydrogen). Semiconductors and cell configurations were studied to best fit a water splitting device. Simple methods like sol-gel and metal oxide decomposition were ones of the methods researchers employ. Cell architecture plays a huge role in efficiency of solar to hydrogen conversion.
