This study collected sales data from 2013 to 2015 to estimate the sales volume of MEPS-compliant appliances (air conditioner, refrigerator, fan, television, and lamp), and subsequently determine the total electricity consumption and saving. It was found that the local market is already saturated with 5-star rated televisions and fans, while the lamp market is dominated by compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) with efficacy range of 5055 lumens/W. By the end of 2015, the total cumulative electricity saving gained is 2,685 GWh, which translates to total cost saving of MYR 850 million and fossil carbon emission reduction of 1,726 ktCO2eq. These multiple positive impacts clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of MEPS in Malaysia. Hopefully, this success story would motivate Malaysia and other developing countries to unlock more opportunities in the future with higher uptake of energy efficiency interventions.
