Partial discharge has become one of the causes for failure in metal enclosed switchgear. The catastrophic failure to the switchgear affects the security to the grid. However, early detection for partial discharge can avoid the catastrophic failure to the metal enclosed switchgear. There are many methods to detect partial discharge. Offline and online PD detection to equipment has been widely used in the industries. This paper presents a comparison between two types of dielectric material on designing a high sensitivity TEV sensor. The comparison is made between nylon model and polythene model in this thesis. Nylon model is proven to have higher sensitivity as the dielectric constant for nylon is higher than polythene. There are two types of tests required to measure the performance of both models. These tests include sinusoidal test detection and pulse test detection. These tests were carried out to analyze the performance of both models. The models were then compared to a commercial TEV sensor to validate the result in detecting partial discharge. Whereas, for sinusoidal test, the results are compared with simulation result to prove the accuracy of the lab test results.
