Summary: | This thesis reports the development of estimating greenhouse gas emissions of fluorinated gases in stationary air -conditioning systems. Fluorinated gases are known to be a powerful greenhouse gas which mostly emitted in small amount or quantity caused by various industrial processes. Since these gases are to be referred as High Global Warming Potential gases, it is crucial for Malaysia to account for the emissions of this gases. Stationary air-conditioning systems are being used in most buildings in Malaysia including malls, supermarkets, retail shops, hospitals, residential areas and offices. Hence, it is possible for the fluorinated gases used in the stationary air-conditioners as the substitute for ozone depleting substances to be emitted into the atmosphere even though the gases are used in a closed system. These emissions might occur by various activities such as new air-conditioning equipment installation or servicing.
The project objective is to identify the activity data of fluorinated gases used in stationary air-conditioning systems. In order to estimate the emissions of these gases, there are calculations will need to be done. The activity data need to be identified so that the data collection would be feasible. Next, the emission factor used for the greenhouse gas inventory calculation in stationary air-conditioning systems also need to be determined as emission factors are uniquely provided for each type of gases to accurately estimate their emissions. Finally, this project will estimate the greenhouse gas emission for stationary air-conditioning system based on 2006 IPCC Guidelines. The estimated value of HFCs in Malaysia for the year 2016 is calculated based on assumptions stated in this thesis. |
