Summary:Suicide rates in Malaysia is alarming as according to the World Health Organization (WHO), Malaysia recorded an average of 5 deaths per day in 2019. Suicidal thoughts could lead to suicidal behaviour; hence factors of ideation should be identified. This study investigated the relationship between personality traits and suicidal ideation among Malaysian adolescents. Participants consist of 132 adolescents, age between 16 to 18 years old, and were randomly selected for this study. Two instruments were used, namely Big Five Inventory-44 (BFI-44) to determine the personality traits, and Revised- Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS) to measure the level of suicidal ideation. The data was analysed using the Pearson Correlation in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings indicated that neuroticism and openness traits have significant relationships with suicidal ideation, while conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness traits showed insignificant relationship. The findings of this study are able to expand literatures related to suicide ideation among Malaysian adolescents. Moreover, with these findings, counsellors could take personality qualities into consideration when developing suicide prevention strategies. By examining client concerns from the perspective of personality development, counsellors and other helping professionals can refer to personality theories to develop suitable interventions for adolescents.
