Couples who married in adolescence are at risk for divorce in less time than couples who
married in adulthood. Early marriage among adolescents also has an impact in various aspects such as schooling, finance, and responsibilities. The objective of this study is
to explore students’ views on early marriage among adolescents, the impact of early marriage, the factors of early marriage, and to explore students’ views on the issues
that exist in early marriage among adolescents in Malaysia. This study uses a qualitative research method which is phenomenological research. A semi-structured interview method was used to interview 12 students in the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, UNIMAS. The study found four themes, which are students' views on early marriage, impact of early marriage, early marriage factors, and issues that inherent in early marriage among adolescents. There are four sub themes for students' views on early marriage among adolescents, which are immature, following trends, avoid immorality, and should not marry. For the sub themes to the impacts of early marriage among adolescents are divorce, burden, neglect of responsibilities, frustration with education, and independent. As for the factors of early marriage among
adolescents, three sub themes have been identified which are being influenced, pregnancy, and family order. Lastly, sub themes for issues inherent in early marriage among adolescents are responsibility, remorse, financial management, and divorce. This study has implications for counsellors in providing appropriate interventions to
help clients who come up with issues related to early marriage. |
