Summary: | Fossil fuel is a great source of energy. However, the sources of fossil fuels are depleting due to over exploitation.
Researchers need to find an alternatives to overcome this issues and it has to be a renewable source since fossil
fuels are non-renewable. Hence, the main purpose of this research is to find an alternative for the raw material for
bioethanol production. A local ingredient, nipa sap was used, nipa sap provides both raw material and also water for fermentation making it more versatile to be used as a medium. In addition to that, due to the really high percentage of sugars in nipa sap, no additional carbon sources were added. Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the naturally existing microorganisms will act as the inoculum and the naturally existing sugar will act as the substrate for the production of bioethanol. Few conditions were introduced to obtain the most economical way in producing ethanol with the least amount of investment needed such as unsterilized bottle with unsterilized sap and also sterilized bottle with unsterilized sap. The profile of sugars and bioethanol was analysed by using High-
Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). At the end of this experiment, the initial sucrose, glucose and xylose content was at 132.59 g/L, 67.48 g/L and 31.75 g/L respectively while the ethanol obtained was 44.16 g/L. Hence, Nipa sap is great fermentation medium for bioethanol production as it can act as both feedstock and fermentation medium. |
