During early years of computers, “punch cards” were used for output, input and data storage. It was the fast way to enter and retrieve data. The person that is given credit for adapting the punch cards used for weaving looms to act as the memory for a mechanical tabulating machine in 1890 is Herman Hollerith. Not long after, came along the databases. In the recent evolution of computers, databases have played a very important part. In the early 1950s, the first computer programs were developed and focused almost completely on coding algorithms and languages. During that time, computers were basically giant calculators. Data such as names and phone numbers were considered as leftovers of processing information. When people in business started using them for real-world purposes and computers were just starting to become commercially available, this leftover data suddenly became important.
