Summary:Soil characteristics are important to evaluate the performance of planted seedlings for reforestation purpose. A study was conducted in order to determine the soil characteristic under reforestation activities to ensure the proper piarming of reforestation effort in the future. Study sites were established in the reforestation areas planted with Dryobalanops beeearii in the year 2005 (DB05) and 2008 (DB08). In these sites, soil samples were collected at the depths of surface layers (0-10 cm) and subsoil layers (30-40 cm) for determination of physicochemical properties. The finding showed that the soils in all studied sites were strongly acidic nature with pH (H20) of less than 5, even at surface soil with sandy texture resulted from its parent material. The total C in DB08 (65.2g kg·l ) were significantly higher than DB05 (34.5g kg'l) perhaps due to the accumulation of litterfall mainly from pioneer tree species. The soils in DB05 showed higher bulk density (1.l9gcm'l) and lower porosity level (55%) as compared to the soils in DB08 due to the differences of clay content in soil texture. Soil texture were different for both soil profiles, DB05 site showed sandy texture and DB08 sites were classified into light clay texture from "feel" method observation. In term of soil physicochemical properties between planting lines and under tree crown, the pH (H20) was significantly higher under tree crown at both sites compared between lines planting. Whereas, the soil bulk density, porosity and total C showed not significantly difference at both sites. An important implication of this study was soil physical and chemical properties should be taken into account as an important indicator when planning reforestation activity.
