Description
Summary:Genetic diversity plays a very important role to developing new and improved rice varieties. Variation in traditional rice varieties is helpful for broadening the crop gene pool and important for selecting plants materials in breeding programme. The genetic relationship among five traditional rice varieties in Sarawak were analysed by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), with seven RAPD primers. PCR with 7 primers applied to 5 varieties produced 28 bands, of which a total 22 (78.57%) were polymorphic. From the result, it shown that Ganan A variety is less similar to Jambi variety compared to others with value similarity is 0.500 while Entemu variety give high value of similarity to Engkatek with 0.909. The dendogram separated all varieties into two clusters at 64% similarity and shows that these varieties were closely related. The knowledge regarding the amount of genetic variation in germplasm accessions and genetic relationships between genotypes are important considerations for designing effective breeding programs.
