Description
Summary:There are some reports by Sarawak Forestry Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (SFC) about the presence of seagrass bed at Sampadi Island. However, there is no proper documentation on these seagrasses. Therefore, this study was designed to describe the meristic and morphological characters of the common seagrass species found at Sampadi Island. A total of 30 seagrass have been examined and confirmed as short leaved variant of Halodule pinifolia. The seagrass has linear leaves shape, 3 veined leaves and a black central vein that split at the leaf tip. The leaf length was around 5.63±1.71 cm, the internode length was 1.48±0.7 cm and each shoot bears 1-4 leaves. The total genomic DNA extraction was successful with specimen SG05 showed a pure DNA preparation (OD260/OD280=1.8) while the other specimens have DNA with either slight phenol or RNA contamination. The efforts to amplify the ITS region is still at the optimization stage.
