STUDY ON THE REPRODUCTION OF RAZOR CLAMS (FAMILY: SOLENIDAE) IN KUCHING BAY, SARAWAK
A study was carried out on the reproduction of razor clams (Family: Solenidae). Samples were obtained from Asajaya Laut and Buntal, Sarawak. Samples collected were mainly Solen regularis Dunker, 1962 (‘Ambal biasa’) used for the Gonadal Condition Index (GCI) study and induced spawning trials. Differ...

Samples were obtained from Asajaya Laut and Buntal, Sarawak. Samples collected were mainly Solen regularis Dunker, 1962 (‘Ambal biasa’) used for the Gonadal Condition Index (GCI) study and induced spawning trials. Differentiating between the male and female gonads was also done for the S. regularis whereby males have milky-white sperms and the females have dark beige eggs. Several attempts of induce spawning were carried out using methods; (1) potassium chloride (KCl) of 0.1 M concentration, (2) a combination of dry chilling with thermal shocking and (3) a combination of dry chilling with KCl (0.1 M, 0.3 M and 0.5 M). This study presents a nine month analysis on the GCI which was conducted from August 2006 to April 2007. Results showed that spawning occurs once a year and the spawning season is predicted to occur in late April to August. Methods (2) and (3) have been proven successful in triggering spawning of S. regularis. The larval development was determined from fertilization stage to ‘D’-larvae stage. However, a complete larval development was not achieved due to technical limitations.
