Description
Summary:The manuscript of a remarkable book (Fig. 1) was deposited approximately over the war years (1937–1947) at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Its author, Réne Bourret (Fig. 2), had previously gained attention for his masterful tomes on turtles (1941), amphibians (1942), marine snakes (1935) and land snakes (in two volumes, 1936a, 1936b) of Indo-China and adjacent areas of mainland south-east Asia. This particular volume on lizards, to be the last of his major herpetological publications on a complex fauna, was to be nearly relegated to obscurity, had it not been for the industry of the Curator of Reptiles of the Paris Museum (Roger Bour) and the willingness of the publishing house (Chimaira Buchhandelsgesellschaft mbH), to make the manuscript see the light of day
