Summary: | This research presents a case study on the synchronization of 2 usually separate plans in the
early stages of construction which are earthwork plan and erosion and sedimentation control plan (ESCP) for the construction of Operator’s Village for Balingian Coal Fired Power Plan. Earthwork plan involves calculating earthwork volume, dividing earthwork into phases and
sequencing of earthwork phases to be synchronized with the Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plan. Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plan involves the selection of best
management practice to mitigate or minimize soil erosion and sedimentation from the project site. Prediction of soil erosion rates and sediment yield of 1) Without Earthwork, Erosion and Sedimentation Control 2) With Earthwork, Erosion and Sedimentation Control were
also carried out for each earthwork phase. Erosion is mostly caused by the effect of rain fall and water flow over soil during and after rain that causes top soil to be removed from its original location. Whilst, sedimentation is the process whereby the eroded material from slopes or channels settles before point of interest. In construction projects, earthwork involves the process of cut and fill that disrupts top soil, making it more vulnerable for erosion. Results obtained from this research shows that erosion rate and sediment yield
reduces significantly after the implementation of earthwork, erosion and sedimentation control for each phase due to installation of sediment control tools and change of slope characteristics after earthwork completion for each phase. Earthwork phase sequence for the project site was planned according to the site condition and critical phase based on its erosion
rates and sediment yield. The criteria that was underlined for earthwork sequencing and selection of sediment control tools from this research can also be applied to other construction site to improve earthwork management and efficiency erosion and sedimentation control. |
