Summary:Coastal zone is defined as an area of land next to the shoreline where the sea and the land meet. It changes rapidly under processes like waves, tides and currents. Coastal erosion is always a serious problem in Malaysia, where approximately 29% of total coastline has eroded and changed the shape of the coastal zone. Coastal erosion is likely to be affected by climate change which include sea level rise and monsoon season. Hence, this study was conducted along the northern coast of Masjid Tanah in Melaka to determine the coastal geomorphology and its vulnerability to climate change by using Coastal Integrity Vulnerability Toolkits (CIVAT). This toolkit includes beach profiling (Emery method) and shoreline tracing adapted from Morton method which were conducted twice in August 2016 and January 2017. Questionnaire survey was also conducted at the study sites. Results show all northern beaches in Masjid Tanah had high vulnerability level and shoreline is retreating until today. Despite the local communities had shown low awareness level on climate change but they are willing to accept more climate change information. The best method to mitigate the problem is the co-operation between the government, non-government organizations (NGOs), private sector and the local communities.
