It has also been planted with trees along its roads and open spaces. However, no research has been conducted on the planted trees. This project aim to assess the structure and functions of trees planted in the parks and school compound in Tanjung Manis. A total of 927 trees belonging to 25 species were recorded in the two parks near the housing area and express boat terminal as well as in the compound of Tanjung Manis Primary School. The four species with the most number of trees were Rohstone regia O. F. Cook (Royal palm), Syzygiuni polyantha Wight. (Jambu air laut), Filicium decipiens Wight & Arn. (Kiara paying) and Syzygium campunalalum Korth (Eugenia). Most of the trees were still young, with mean DBH ranging from 3.8cm to 36.4cm and total height ranging from 1.6m to 17.0m. The young age and the poor health of some trees did not allow the trees to effectively perform their functions of providing beauty, shade, lowering local temperature, providing habitat for birds, insects and small mammals, and reducing noise and air pollutants. Twelve of the species are on the recommended list of the National Landscape Guidelines. The study confirms the close relationship between tree structure and functions, and made several recommendations to improve tree planting programmes.
