Water and sedimentary quality of Baleh River
The study was conducted as very few studies had been done on Baleh River. The objective of this study was to determine the water and sediment quality of downstream of the proposed dam site, Baleh River. Two samplings were being held. Data of in-situ parameters for water were collected and water samp...

Q Science (General) QD Chemistry The study was conducted as very few studies had been done on Baleh River. The objective of this study was to determine the water and sediment quality of downstream of the proposed dam site, Baleh River. Two samplings were being held. Data of in-situ parameters for water were collected and water samples of ex-situ parameters were brought back for analyses. Rainfall event during the early morning before second sampling conducted cause TSS to fall in the range of278-1 061 mg/L and thus water was classified as Class IV and Class V based on NWQS. Turbidity also increase from 21.53-141.67 NTU of first sampling to 376.25-1319.84 NTU of second sampling due to rainfall event. COD in both samplings were of values 26.67-53.33 mg 02iL which is classified as Class III and Class IV based on NWQS. BOD5 in both samplings (except station 4 above Sungai Kain) of values 3.33-4.18 mg 02iL are classified as Class III based on NWQS. Conversely, parameter of TAN, DO and pH are maintained at Class I and Class II based on NWQS for both trips. Organic matter of sediment by LOI method (1.45-3.86 %) was lower compared to the pollution level of 13 % set by SMSs TP sediment of 198.09-388.66 mg l kg was lower compared to the pollution level of 1600 mg l kg set by SMSs. WQI of all stations of first sampling shows Class II which is considered as clean and still suitable for sensitive aquatic species and recreational activities. WQI of all stations of second sampling show them being classified as Class III. It is very clear that the rainfall event on the morning before second sampling had greatly increased TSS value, thus worsening the water quality, which became not clean and not suitable for sensitive aquatic species.
