Addressing this challenge has become particularly difficult for contractors engaged in construction projects at the worksite. In Malaysia, the inadequate waste management practices of construction stakeholders, as evidenced by poor waste record-keeping, insufficient waste sorting and recycling measures, and inadequate support from clients and authorities, underscore the need for enhanced waste management awareness. Consequently, this research aims to explore the causes of construction material waste in the Kuching residential construction and its waste management initiatives. Three research objectives were formulated to address the corresponding research questions. The quantitative approach was employed in this study, employing a structured questionnaire survey with a five-point Likert scale to generate data for analysis. The target respondents were CIDB-registered contractors ranging from Grade 6 to Grade 7 involved in residential projects. The questionnaire consisted of seventeen variables related to the causes of construction material waste and six waste management initiatives identified through an extensive literature review. Data collected from the respondents were analyzed using the SPSS. Furthermore, the stakeholders' willingness to pay (WTP) for construction waste management was evaluated using the contingent valuation method (CVM). Through factor analysis, the identified factors were categorized into four groupings: Material Procurement and Handling-Related Causes, External Influences-Related Causes, Operational Efficiency and Collaboration-Related Causes, and Design and On-Site Efficiency-Related Causes. Among the six waste management initiatives, waste reduction planning activities ranked highest. Additionally, the analysis revealed no statistically significant difference in reported willingness to pay (WTP) between the two contractor groups, as indicated by a p-value exceeding 0.05.
