Azmi Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Welding Quality Inspection)September 2014 The arcs associated with arc welding emit high level of ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The ultraviolet radiation exposure is known to cause potential effects such as erythema in skin and photokeratoconjunctivitis. Arc welding processing scatters bright light with high levels of UVR emission including full UV spectrum (UVA, UVB, and UVC). On this FYP, the purpose to study about the measurement UVR in arc welding is important to know the level of UVR emitted by arc welding. This information will help in evaluate potential UVR hazards in welding workplaces and taking protective measures against it. This study established a comprehensive approach to measure UVR from common arc welding process, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Three samples of the GMAW process follow the codes and ASME IX standards have been completed and all samples measuring 50mm x 120mm x 6mm. All samples have been designed using the square plate. Configuration has been prepared to join the plates. All the samples are made on 6mm thickness plate using the same parameters. UVR measurement was performed while the welding arc was struck and maintained on a flat plate of carbon steel for 50 second at a distance 50cm with protection material (mask and gloves). Results showed that different processes may produce different UVR level.
