Parenthood Including parent and child, husbands, fathers, wives, mothers These days, stress is dramatically on the rise. Being a parent can be stressful, especially for parents of young adolescents whose children are entering a rebellious age. Thus, this study aims to identify the effects of parental stress on ways of coping and parent-adolescent attachment. This research using the correlation research design. Questionnaires were used to obtain the necessary data. Total of 726 participants which consist of 363 adolescents and 363 of their parents participated in this study. The measurement in this research used three sets of questionnaires, The Parental Stress Scales (PSS), The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ) and The Parental Attachment Questionnaire (PAQ). Besides the use of the questionnaires mentioned above, this research also evaluated a set of demographic information. Descriptively, the results found that parental stress levels for the parents of 13 year old adolescents in Kota Kinabalu tended to be high as 361 parents which is 98% reported having moderate and high stress levels. Only 2 among three 363 parents which is 2% reported low stress levels. The results of hypothesis testing suggested that parental stress affects the three ways through which parents cope with stress, namely Distancing, Self-Controlling and Escape Avoidance. On the other hand, the results reported that parental stress does not affect the parent-adolescent attachment. The mediated effects indicate that ways of coping (distancing and selfcontrolling) act as a mediator for the relationship between parental stress and parentadolescent attachment. The results support the theories of past studies such as different ways of coping have certain relationships with stress, especially emotionfocused coping. Although the effects reported are small, this research confirmed that parental stress does affect certain ways of coping such as distancing, escape avoidance and self-control. Through this study, parents of young adolescents in Kota Kinabalu could look into their ways of coping with stress. By finding the right ways to cope with stress, parents of young adolescents can reduce their stress. 0020 Thesis NonPeerReviewed text en https://eprints.ums.edu.my/id/eprint/42046/1/24%20PAGES.pdf text en https://eprints.ums.edu.my/id/eprint/42046/2/FULLTEXT.pdf Leoh, E Mui (0020) Effect of parental stress on ways of coping and parent-adolescent attachment among adolescent in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
