Description
Summary:Boron based preservatives are one of the most significant wood preservatives in the wood preservation industry. However, due to its leaching problem, their application was limited to the above-ground application only. Thus, this study was an attempt to evaluate the durability properties of treated Rubberwood and Laran wood after exposed to rotting fungi (Pycnophorous sanguineus Wulfex Fries). To improve the leaching problem of Boron-tannin formulation, Caprolactam, Hexamine, formalin and Low molecular phenol-formaldehyde was added into the preservatives mixture. Generally, the durability of treated samples almost 50% increase compared to the untreated sample. The results reveal that Rubberwood treated samples was more resistance towards white-rot fungi compared to Laran wood samples. This is probably due to the density of Rubberwood was much higher compared to Laran. Moreover, the addition of Caprolactam, Hexamine and formalin was significantly reducing the weight loss percentage of the treated samples. As a conclusion, the addition of additives as Caprolactam and Hexamine into Boron-tannin formulation has increased the durability of rubberwood and Laran wood respectively. The addition of Caprolactam, Hexamine and Formalin significantly increased their durability.
