In this study, the growth performance of upland rice variety Mutiara was compared in different levels of drought stress under field condition. The experimental design used was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 10 replicates for each treatment. The treatments were 100% field capacity (control), 75% field capacity, 50% field capacity and 25% field capacity. The data was analysed using one way ANOVA and LSD was applied to compare means. No significant differences (p>0.05) were observed in plant height, leaf length, leaf width, leaf number, root length, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, root-shoot ratio, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoid, relative water content and praline content. However, the tiller number of treatments of FC 100%, FC 75% and FC 50% were significantly higher (p<0.05) than tiller number of treatment of FC 25%. The LAI of treatment of FC 50% was significantly lower (p<0.05) than treatment of FC 75%. It was concluded that FC 75% was sufficient for irrigation as there were no significant differences observed for any components when compared to the controlled treatment, FC 100%. Further research is needed to study the drought stress effect on other upland rice varieties.
