The development of lateral line system of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) during metamorphosis period
This study was conducted to clarify the development of the lateral line system in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) and to understand the changes of swimming behaviour of Asian seabass with larval growth. The fertilised eggs were collected and were incubated in incubation tank at the hatchery of Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) until hatching. The newly hatched larvae were reared until 40 days after hatched. The larvae were fed with Brach ion us plicalus. Artemia nauplii, cope pod and artificial pellet powder. The larvae were sampled every day for 40 days for observation of the neuromasts development under light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The newly hatched larvae floated near to the water surface in the rearing tank. On the third day after hatched, the larvae showed positive rhcotaxis and commenced feeding on rotifers. The appearance of schooling behaviour in 14 days after hatched Asian seabass was coincided with the completion of the lateral lines on head. When the larvae were 15 days after hatched, the free neuromasts on the head had decreased in number as the neuromasts became contained within the canal. The lateral lines on the head were found around the eyes, between the nostrils, on the opercular and on the lower jaw. The canals on trunk began to form during the development of scales in 21 days after hatched larvae. Examination of the development of lateral line system and its relationship with the behavioural changes will provide insight into the ecology of Asian seabass in the wild. 2008 Academic Exercise NonPeerReviewed text en https://eprints.ums.edu.my/id/eprint/10630/1/ae0000002933.pdf Tan, Nai Han (2008) The development of lateral line system of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) during metamorphosis period.
