This study was conducted to determine the major phytochemicals that present in the leaves and branches pans of Diospyros buxifolia. This study is also aimed at determining the in vitro antidiabetic activity of Diospyros buxifolia through inhibition of alpha-amylase and amyloglucosidase activity. The samples were extracted using two types of solvents which are distilled water and 70% of methanol.
The extracts were evaluated for antidiabetic activity by measuring alpha amylase and amyloglucosidase inhibitory activity at different concentrations of extracts. The results showed that the highest alpha amylase inhibitory activity was exhibited by methanolic extracts of branches (84.68 ± 0.03%) followed by methanolic extract of leaves (84.00 ± 0.08%), aqueous extracts of branches (49.44 ± 0.05%) and lastly aqueous extract of leaves (40.71 ± 0.03%). The highest percentage of inhibition of amyloglucosidase was displayed by methanolic extracts of branches (62.72 ± 0.15%) followed by methanolic extract of leaves (58.93 ± 0.08%), aqueous extracts of branches (36.65 ± 0.05%) and lastly aqueous extract of leaves (20.57 ± 0.03%). It can be concluded that methanolic branch extract of Diospyros buxifolia displayed as the most effective alpha amylase and amyloglucosidase inhibitor. |
