Summary: | Scavengers face a tremendous potential health risk while scavenging on the dumping sites. The incomes earned from scavenging are quite low .It is only sufficient for the scavengers to support their daily livelihood The present study aimed to assess the potential health risk and I waste dumping sites of Kelantan. A structured questionnaire was constructed to capture the demographic characteristics, monthly income. Potent'a P4111" 611" scavengers as well as type of materials and volume of each material scavenged The target population in this study was 50 respondents The study showed that scavengers were able to earn RM 465.5 per month on average It also found that a total of 50 scavengers were suffered from different type of diseases such as skin disease (28%). respiratory disease (38%), diarrhea (38%) as well as sore throat cough. and fever (60%). Besides, Scavengers also suffered from injured by any hard or sharp objects (72%) and backache (72%). The study showed that glass (68%), plastic (10()%) meta (94%), electronic part (92%), aluminium (100%) and paper (10%) were the type waste collected by scavengers at all of the dumping sites Majority of waste such as plastic, metal, glass, aluminium and paper collected by scavengers exceed 10 kilogram per month except for electronic part which was less than 10 kilogram per month There were high percentage of scavengers who taken appropriate safety measure by wearing rubber boot (100%) and using tools (100%) during On the other hand there were also quite high percentage of scavengers who did not wear glove (34%) and facemask (68%) during scavenging. In conclusion, scavengers with higher years oi experience, low level of education and middle level of income were at higher risk.It was hopes that through this study, Malaysian government will more concern about the health condition of scavengers by providing them with vaccination and medical body checkup against various diseases. |
