Summary: | In naval applications, diesel engines are used for main and auxiliary propulsion systems. Diesel engines is made of various components and subsystems which proven to be affected by various types of defects and malfunctions. In this paper, a statistical approach has been integrated to identify, classify the defects from diesel engine defect databases. Based on defect reports between year 2013 and 2019, the most prominent type of defect has been identified. The proposed method discussed in this paper focuses on type of defects and components of diesel engines recorded in terms of number of cases which could be used for other machinery in a ship propulsion system such as gear boxes, shaft bearings, stern tubes and oil distribution boxes. |
