The technique has been used widely in business and industry for couple of decades, and within a decade the concept has been broadly embraced and applied in higher education. This paper describes the effectiveness of the benchmarking application practices in higher education from the different perspectives to improve quality. The paper also presents a critical review of research works that have been done around the world in the area of benchmarking in higher education.
