Summary: | This course focuses on the study of the complex of horizontal and vertical relationships characterizing the organization of pitch in tonal, contrapuntal compositions. Students will complete exercises in all five species of counterpoint and will analyze selected repertoire by J.S. Bach. They will learn how to identify non chord tones, chord progressions and ellipses, while developing an understanding of how counterpoint generates harmony. Students will also compose short tonal pieces applying the principals of species counterpoint. |
