Summary:Megalaspis cordyla, commonly known as torpedo scad, is a commercially important fish in many countries including Malaysia. It was widely consumed due to easy avaiability and reasonable price. Regardless of its commercial importance, no proper guidelines available for it’s sustainable production. Information about biological aspects particularly growth, condition factor, size at first sexual maturity, and spawning season is necessary for proper policy making and management. Unfortunately, such information is lacking in Malaysia especially in Peninsular Malaysia. Therefore, this study was conducted to (i) estimate the temporal variation in growth co-efficient, condition factor, fecundity, and oocytes development, (ii) determine the size of sexual maturity and spawning season of M. cordyla from the East and West Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia, and (iii) compare the growth, condition, fecundity, oocytes development, the size of sexual maturity and spawning season of M. cordyla between East and West coasts of Peninsular Malaysia. Fish samples were collected from both east coast and west coast of peninsular Malaysia. Results indicated that males and females M. cordyla populations at both coasts of Peninsular Malaysia are well balanced. Both male and female fish showed allometric growth (b<3) (p< 0.05) in almost all sampling months. The spawning season of M. cordyla is very short, which is from May to July with the peak-spawning in June. The size of first maturity for male and female M. cordyla was 24.7 cm and 25.2 cm respectively at the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, while 24.8 cm and 25.1 cm were determined for male and female, respectively at the west coast of peninsular Malaysia. The results of this study could be useful to estimate the minimum permissible capture size of M. cordyla along the east coast of peninsular Malaysia under the management objective to allow all females to enter the spawning stock biomass at least once. The results of this study can also be used to provide guidance for a strong monitoring programme that regularly determines the changes in size at first sexual maturity in relation to the high fishing pressure and/or other factors. It would be useful to continue the study to observe the inter-annual variability of maturity changes in relation to size and season, which may vary from year to year. Such information will be useful for a proper management strategy for M. cordyla.
