Farmers usually depend on the supply of green water from the fermentation of wastewater or added ruminant manure, which could possibly be linked to fish disease issues. Various species of microalgae have been used in aquaculture as feed in hatcheries, but the tedious production procedure always limits the usage. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis sp. have been cultured in four different culture vessels (250ml, 500ml, 2-liter, 20 liter), and the growth performance will be measured based on the plotted curve. They were grown under control conditions with pH 6.8 -8.3, temperature at 23-24oC, with 24 hours of light, salinity of 29-31ppt and appropriate aeration. The growth rate of both Chorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis sp. is different under the various sizes of the culture vessels. In a 250 ml vessel/beaker, both species have rapid growth, and the best growth does not show any significant difference (cell density ranged between 117 x 106 cells/ml and 119 x 106 cells/ml) between the species. They had slower growth in 500 ml and 2 liter culture vessels. In a 20 liter carboy, Chlorella vulgaris reached the highest population density with 120 x 106 cell/ml in contrast to Nannochloropsis sp. with only 109 x 106 cell/ml on Day 18. Both species of microalgae show good growth performance under simple culture facilities and have the possibility of mass production to be used in hatcherires. They could become an alternative to clean green water and promote the halalan toyyiban concept in aquaculture.
