This has been acknowledged not as a modern phenomenon, but it is as old as the beginning of the encounter between human rationality and hadith. Regardless of the debate pertaining to the authenticity and epistemic status of hadith, literature has granted us the opportunity to read through the experience of past notables in tackling the problematic content of hadith texts. In the modern scholarship of hadith, two sub areas have been established to engage with this subject: the study of mukhtalif al-hadith (contradictory hadith) and the more general study of mushkil al-hadith (problematic hadith). Both have contributed to the construct of strategies and principles in dealing with a particular type of problem in the hadith language. This paper briefly traces the development of concepts and literature germane to the subject and offers an overview of principles devised in those literature to resolve conflict, reconcile contradiction or even explain away certain problems. The survey is not limited to Sunni literature but covers as well discourse and works advanced by major sects that engaged with hadith or narration from the past.
